Mara is a seasoned lawyer with 20 years’ experience in Indigenous, environmental, environmental assessment, administrative and constitutional law. Mara has a comprehensive understanding of the legal issues facing both the private and public sectors. Most recently, Mara was the first in-house counsel for the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board. Before that, Mara worked for over a decade in the federal Department of Justice and for approximately two years in the Yukon Department of Justice.Mara brings innovation, curiosity, conscientiousness, energy and good judgment to every new challenge. She works hand-in-hand with clients to help them get to where they want to go. She has demonstrated to her clients, time and again, that robust and pragmatic legal advice at the beginning of and throughout a project is a sure way to avoid litigation in the future. She is a problem-solver and cancreate order out of chaos.Mara has a strong commitment to interest-based negotiations and has demonstrated that where there is the will, she can help her clients find the way to a successful outcome. Mara has the unique ability to be aware of, control, and express her emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. This capacity has allowed her to effectively provide advice to clients on self-government and comprehensive land claims agreements in jurisdictions across Canada and to successfully negotiate a number of government-to-government and international agreements.
