Description
Matthew Urback practices in the areas of estate, civil, and commercial litigation. He has appeared before the Ontario Court of Appeal as well as various courts of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, including the Estates List, Commercial List, and the Small Claims Court.

Matthew articled with Shibley Righton in 2010-2011. He returned to the firm as a lawyer in 2011, where he has practiced since.

Matthew has a particular focus on Estates, Wills, and Trusts Litigation. He has experience with a variety of practice areas within this field, such as will challenges, guardianship applications, passing of accounts applications, solicitor’s negligence, and other estate disputes. He acts for fiduciaries, both individual and institutional beneficiaries, charities, and drafting solicitors. Matthew also regularly acts as Section 3 counsel appointed under the Substitute Decisions Act, 1992.

As well, Matthew practices in estate planning and administration, drafts wills and powers of attorney, and acts as an Estate Trustee, where he uses his litigation experience to better assist his clients in achieving their goals.

Prior to his law career, Matthew graduated from law school at Queen’s University where he made the Dean’s Honour List and won the R. W. Leonard Prize in Trusts. While at Queen’s, he was a columnist for the law school newspaper and President of his graduating class. Prior to law school, he obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mathematics and Human Biology at the University of Toronto, and graduated with Distinction.

Matthew regularly writes articles and contributes to stories about current issues in Estates Law, and has been featured in Deadbeat (the newsletter of the OBA’s Estates & Trust Section), the Lawyer’s Daily, Investment Executive, CBC News Radio, and the Financial Post.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoys sports, travelling, and spending time with his family.
