Description
ROBERT A. (BOB) KLOTZ, B.SC. (Math), J.D., LL.M. (Int’l Bus. Law)
Bob was called to the Ontario bar in 1981. He practices law in the Toronto firm of Klotz Associates, Barristers & Solicitors, focusing primarily on bankruptcy and insolvency, commercial litigation and international litigation. Bob has served as National Chair of the CBA Insolvency Section, Chair of the OBA Insolvency Section, President of the International Bankruptcy Commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), Editor of the National Creditor-Debtor Review, and as a federally appointed member of the Personal Insolvency Task Force. He is the author of Bankruptcy, Insolvency and Family Law, 2nd Ed. (Carswell, supplemented to 2007, 3rd ed. forthcoming) and many published articles. He is particularly interested in the intersection between bankruptcy and other areas of law such as family law, estates, civil procedure, personal injury and international law, and has written and spoken on these topics across Canada and internationally to lawyers, insolvency professionals and judicial conferences. He has testified on several occasions before both houses of Parliament on insolvency issues. His specific proposals for legislative reform, along with his lobbying activities, have resulted in legislative changes to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act (BIA) in 1997 and 2009. In 2011 he argued the Schreyer case before the Supreme Court of Canada, and is currently engaged in a lobbying campaign to amend the BIA so that the problem in Schreyer cannot recur.
